Hey there, fellow side hustlers! Oscar here from the Side Hustle Playbook, and today I’m excited to share a step-by-step guide on creating simple text-based designs for T-shirts. Whether you’re eyeing Merch by Amazon or Etsy using print-on-demand services like Printful or Printify, I’ve got you covered. Even if you don’t have a design background, you can easily get started and start making sales.

Tools and Software Recommendations

First things first, you need the right tools. I recommend Adobe Illustrator for creating your designs. It’s user-friendly, and you can subscribe to it monthly, which is way more affordable than buying it outright. Plus, there’s a free trial, so you can give it a spin before committing. If Illustrator isn’t your thing, Photoshop is another good option, but I prefer Illustrator because it’s what I learned on and have been using for years.

Font Selection and Licensing

Now, let’s talk fonts. The right font can make or break your design. Check out Creative Market for some cool and unique fonts. It’s essential to ensure that any font you choose is licensed for commercial use, especially for print-on-demand products. Always read the fine print to avoid any legal hiccups down the road.

Trademark Search

Before you finalize your design, do a trademark search using the USPTO database. This step is crucial to make sure the phrase you want to use isn’t already registered. You don’t want to invest time and effort into a design only to find out it’s trademarked and can’t be used. I’ll show you how to do this quickly and efficiently to save you from potential legal headaches.

Design Process

Let’s dive into the fun part – designing! Here’s a simple process to follow:

  1. Set Up Your File: Open Adobe Illustrator and set your canvas size to 15×18 inches (or 4500×5400 pixels). This size works perfectly for Merch by Amazon and other print-on-demand platforms. Make sure you’re working in CMYK color mode for the best print quality.
  2. Choose Your Fonts: Select your fonts from Creative Market or other sources. Ensure they are licensed for commercial use. Unique fonts can really make your design stand out.
  3. Add Your Text: Create your text blocks. For instance, if you’re designing a “Side Hustler” shirt, break it into two blocks – “Side” and “Hustler.” This allows for better control and alignment.
  4. Align and Adjust: Use Illustrator’s tools to align and resize your text. Make sure everything is centered and looks good on your canvas. Play around with colors to see what looks best.
  5. Export Your Design: Once you’re happy with your design, it’s time to export it. Hide any background layers to ensure your file is transparent. Export as a PNG with 300 PPI for high-quality prints.

Upload and Sell

With your design ready, you can now upload it to Merch by Amazon, Printful, Printify, or any other platform you’re using. Ensure your file meets all the platform’s requirements to avoid any issues. Once uploaded, your design is ready to be printed on T-shirts and sold to customers.

Final Thoughts

Creating text-based T-shirt designs is a fantastic way to get started in the print-on-demand business, even if you’re not a designer. With the right tools, fonts, and a little bit of creativity, you can make designs that sell. Always remember to check for trademarks and ensure your fonts are licensed for commercial use.
